1. Association Description
African Women in Algebra (AWA) is an association of African women working in algebra and its
applications. It held its first meeting virtually on July 28th, 2023. Currently, AWA has 41 members
from 10 African countries and runs several activities, including a weekly virtual research seminar.

2. Motivation for the workshop
One of the requirements that prevent African women from ascending the academic ladder is the
availability of a prescribed number of research publications. Career women fail to get the required
publications because they are torn between family and work responsibilities. Moreover, family
commitments leave career women with less freedom of geographic mobility. Such hindrances
have further scared junior researchers from pursuing careers in mathematics: this increases the
gender gap in STEM fields.
The Inaugural African Women in Algebra Workshop seeks to address the gender gap in STEM
fields by providing African women with a supportive and collaborative research environment that
fosters their interest and advancement in algebraic careers.
3. Workshop Objectives:
- Promoting women participation: To create a space where women feel encouraged and supported to actively engage with algebraic concepts, fostering a sense of belonging in the traditionally male-dominated field.
- Career Advancement: To foster collaborations among African female algebraists, promote their research, and increase their visibility.
- Skill Enhancement: To provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of algebraic principles, from fundamental concepts to advanced applications, through interactive sessions and collaborative activities.
- Algebra Advancement: To advance algebra through research.
- Mentorship Opportunities: To facilitate networking and mentorship opportunities by bringing in senior women in algebra to share their experiences and insights, inspiring participants to pursue careers in mathematics.
- Resource Distribution: To provide participants with learning materials and tools that will enable them to continue their algebraic studies beyond the workshop.
