Introduction
The Nigerian Women in Mathematics (NWM) is a national body under the African Women in Mathematics Association (AWMA). It aligns with AWMA’s mission to promote mathematics among African women and girls, foster research collaboration, and provide mentorship and support to women mathematicians in academia and beyond.
History
The idea for NWM was initiated in 2008 by Dr. Deborah Olufunmilayo Makinde (Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife), who envisioned a network to connect women mathematicians across Nigeria through research collaboration, mentorship, and outreach. Her vision was presented during the Pan African Congress of Mathematicians (PACOM-2010) in Abuja.
This vision materialized with the inaugural meeting of the NWM on 8 July 2014 at the Department of Mathematics, University of Ibadan. The event was supported by the Professorial Chair of Pastor E. A. Adeboye, then held by Prof. Olabisi Oreofe Ugbebor (University of Ibadan).
Since then, NWM has achieved several milestones:

Hosting biennial conferences, starting in 2017 at the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, and later at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (2019), Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS) (2022), Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma (2025).

In 2018, NWM hosted the Second Conference of West African Women in Mathematics at the University of Ibadan, with international participation and a special outreach to female secondary-school students.

NWM is now officially registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission of Nigeria and maintains an office in Ibadan.
Our Mission
To connect, mentor, and empower women mathematicians in Nigeria by fostering research collaboration, organizing outreach and training events, and promoting mathematics to girls and women across the nation.
