The speaker, Professor Sibusiso Moyo, holds a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Natal, Durban and a Masters (with distinction) in Tertiary Education Management from the LH Martin Institute, University of Melbourne Australia. She has published widely in the Mathematical Sciences with a focus on differential equations and optimization problems in international peer reviewed journals. She has published over 80 papers with the majority of these in the Mathematical Sciences and the rest in interdisciplinary with a focus on selected areas in Tertiary Education Management. She has also successfully supervised postgraduate students and continues mentoring and supervising at Masters and Doctoral level. She is currently an Associate Editor for the Journal of Higher Education Policy and Management published by Taylor and Francis and has served as Guest Editor of the Mathematical Methods in the Applied Sciences Journal (published by John Wiley & Sons) and Journal of Engineering Mathematics (published by Springer). She serves as a board member for Agenda Feminist Media (which hosts the Agenda journal published by Taylor & Francis). She acquired a number of grants and awards – the recent ones being the National Research Foundation (NRF) customized grant to support female researchers with PhDs and prepare them for NRF Rating at institutional level, the Guangzhou International Sister University (GISU) grant to support a collaborative project on entrepreneurship (2021 and 2022) and was a co-applicant on an Erasmus+ European Union grant awarded to the Technology Higher Education Network South Africa, to establish the network of Higher Education Reform Experts (HERESA), awarded to the Technological Higher Education Network South Africa (THENSA) in partnership with OBREAL -Global Observatory and co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme, European Union from 2020. She is also co-recipient of the EU Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme grant agreement no. 101036900 on Renewable Energies for Africa: Effective Valorization of Agri-Food Wastes on behalf of the Durban University of Technology in partnership with eThekwini Municipality in Durban, South Africa. Her primary passion is in Mathematics and promotes this through the advancement work of the Center for the Advancement of Science and Mathematics Education (CASME -see link), as a Chairperson of the CASME Board, and is also committed to human capital capacity development in the research and innovation space, as well as developing ecosystems to support emerging entrepreneurs. She is an awardee and recipient of the 2019 and 2021 Entrepreneurship Development in Higher Education (EDHE) award made to a Deputy Vice-Chancellor . The EDHE programme is a programme of the Department of the South African Higher Education and Training (DHET) and Universities South Africa (USAf). She is also a Board Member of Innovate Durban (South Africa) and is co-Dean of the Confucius Institute, Durban University of Technology, South Africa; Honorary Dean: School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Tianjin Vocational Institute, China (2021-2023).
Professor Moyo is vice-president of AWMA for the southern region. She is also the past Vice-Chairperson for the Organisation for Women in Developing Countries (South African Chapter) (OWSD SA).

Title | Symmetry analysiy of differential equations and their applications: Recent case studies |
Abstract |
Most natural phenomena is modelled by nonlinear differential equations. In finding solutions of nonlinear differential equations, one can use group theoretic methods that allow, under certain conditions, the transformation of a nonlinear system to a linear system which can then be easily integrated or solved in terms of quadratures. Symmetry methods as applied to differential equations have received considerable attention in the literature, thanks to the Lie group theory and analysis attributed to Sophus Lie. Symmetry analysis is one of the most powerful tool that gives a systematic way of determining transformations that can map equations from nonlinear form to linear forms as well as transform systems of equations to a set that is more amenable to analysis. This can serve on cost and time spent by researchers on solving problems that originate from various physical systems occuring in nature and optimisation problems as well. In this presentation we will present the method, its applications and look at selected recent case studies.
