Women in SAGE in Senegal

The African Women in Mathematics Association (AWMA) was established in July 2013 in Cape Town, South Africa (http://www.africanwomeninmath.org). Mainly, its purpose is to promote mathematics and the networking for women mathematicians in Africa. Activities of AWMA include research workshops, outreach for high school students as well as undergraduate and graduate students. AWMA has already organised a workshop on women mathematicians in each of the five regions of Africa (Ouagadougou 2012, Cape Town 2013, Naivasha 2015, Morocco 2015, Limbe 2019). Most of them were organised in the fringe of a CIMPA school.

Now AWMA is willing to focus on scientific activities that bring together, as much as possible, women mathematicians speakers and also a majority of women participants.

Sage Days conferences have a long tradition: https://wiki.sagemath.org/Workshops. They started in 2007 and more than 100 editions have been organized since then all around the world. In these conferences participants learn SageMath programming skills and contribute to its development. SageMath (https://www.sagemath.org/) is a free open-source software mathematical system. SageMath uses both students and professionals for development. The development of SageMath is supported by both volunteer work and grants.

Special sessions of Women in Sage Days have been already organized in 5 different countries (USA, Korea, France, Canada and Crete): editions 26, 33, 42 and 50 in Seattle, 37 in Seoul, 62 in Portland, 69 in San Diego, 82 in Paris, 90 in Claremont, 95 in Montreal, 98 in Archanes and 103 in St. Loius Missouri. All of them have been a success, and not only the participants have learn programming skills and SageMath have been developed, but also women have supported themselves and created new collaborations.

We strongly believe that a Women in Sage conference happening in AIMS Senegal and with the support of AWMA and the Senegalese Women in Mathematics Association (SWMA) is a great opportunity for everybody. Moreover the event will be held in a fringe of a CIMPA school on number theory and cryptograhy, if  the CIMPA school is approved (it is currently under evaluation by CIMPA).

1.Objectives

- to bring together African female Mathematicians to work together, motivate themselves and see different female role models.

- to start new research projects and collaborations between women mathematicians in all Africa.

- to create networks for mentoring young girls and women in Mathematical research.

- to teach African female Mathematicians new programming skills.

- last, but no least, to contribute to Sage.

2. Conference Planning and organization

3.Programme

This activity will be held on five days and will include courses as well as projects realization. There will be 4-5 group leaders which are specialist on different math areas (Cryptography, Combinatorics, Number Theory, Geometry and Applied Maths). Each leader will proposes 2-3 projects and each project will gather 3-4 people.

- Monday: registration, Sage installation on laptops of participants, courses on "How to contribute to Sage ?" and "Introduction to Sage" and panel discussion.

- Tuesday: Projects presentation and working on groups.

- Wednesday: working on groups, excursion and panel discussion.

- Thursday: working on groups and gala dinner.

- Friday: Presentation of results and future plans.

All the main project leaders have confirmed their participation. The program includes discussion on women mathematicians
