History

Creation

AWMA was created on 19th July 2013, after the participation of several african women mathematicians at the workshop organized by AMUCWMA at Cape Town.

History

The history and the creation of AWMA are closely related to the history of  the commission for women in mathematics of AMUCWMA (African Mathematical Union Commission on Women in Mathematics in Africa) of the African Mathematical Union (AMU). In 2009 during the UMA congress taking place at Yammoussoukro in Ivory Coast, the executive committee and the chairs of the commissions have been renewed. The new direction of  AMUWCMA has initiated activities for  african women in mathematics. and in particular made plans to organize, starting in 2012, a workshop in each of the five regions of Africa, in collaboration with CIMPA (International Center for Pure and Applied Mathematics). The first one took place in 2012 at Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso (Western Africa). Using this meeting, the african women mathematicians attending wished to get organized in an association. The second workshop took place in july  2013 in Cape Town, South Africa  (Austral Africa). AWMA got constituted there. The third workshop will take place in july  2015 at  Navaisha in Kenya (Eastern Africa), the first general meeting of AWMA will take place there.

Former meetings of african women in mathematics:

1990: AMUCWMA organized a Symposium on the topic "Mathematics Education of Women in Africa-Problems and Prospects" at the University of Benin, Benin City, in Nigeria, 27-30 november 1990.

2008: African Mathematics Millennium Science Initiative (AMMSI) organized a Symposium on "african woman and mathematics" at Maputo, Mozambique, 29-30 november 2008.

2012: AMUCWMA organized a workshop "femmes & maths Ouaga 2012" at Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso, 26 -27 october 2012.
