The speaker, Marie-Françoise Roy is a French mathematician noted for her work in real algebraic geometry. She has been Professor of Mathematics at the Université Rennes 1 since 1985 and in 2009 was made a Chevalier of the French Legion of Honour. Roy was president of Société Mathématique de France from 2004 to 2007. In 1986, Roy was one of the founders of European Women in Mathematics (EWM), and was the convenor of EWM 2009-2013. In 1987 she co-founded the French organization for women in mathematics, Femmes et Mathématiques, and became the organization's first president. Marie-Françoise Roy is chair of the IMU Committee for Women in Mathematics (CWM) and coordinator of the Gender Gap in Science project gender-gap-in-science.org. She is also founding member of AWMA.

| Abstract |
The talk starts with a basic mathematical problem: How many roots for a real univariate polynomial? This problem was studied by Descartes, Sturm and Hermite and their algorithmic methods are still important today. A vast multivariate generalization is due to Tarski, with his famous quantifier elimination result. Various methods for quantifier elimination will be presented, and their algorithmic complexity will be discussed. |
